I, for one, am proud of the US and hopeful for my new Commander in Chief.
The markets showed what kind of hope they have in Obama today.
I am actually in favour of more abortion and more government (ie more transparency in the run-amok banks and insurance agencies). As for the other stuff anonymous #2, I doubt your little Bush-loving world will come tumbling around you any time soon.

Get off your high horse. I won't speak for ERP, but increased access to abortion for women who want it is a good thing. The logical consequence of that is that there might be more abortions, and if the result is that there are fewer children born into families who are unable to care for them, fewer neglected and abused children, then yes that is a good thing. I've seen too many pitiful, hopeless children to want that cycle to continue.
I'm sorry if that offends you. We may have an irreducible disagreement here. Abortion is icky and I'll make no apologies for that. It would be better if all women had the access, education, and foresight to use contraception and abstinence to obviate the need for abortion. But so long as there is a need for abortion, I don't have any shame in standing up and defending the practice.

ERP said that he wants more abortions. He did not say that he wants more access to abortion.
There is an enormous difference.
What kind of society do you want to live in? One where more mothers suffer the devastating psychological of having an abortion? More suicide of mothers in the first year post-abortion? More depression? More death? More disregard for the lives of the frail in our population?
If you don't care about the millions of children who are being destroyed in the womb of a pregnant mother, at least care about the pregnant mother enough to spare her the post abortion sequelae which will ravage her emotions and thoughts for years after the abortion.
At least care about the Hippocratic Oath: of doing no harm.

Again, I don't speak for ERP. But I will say this: on the balance, abortion is a social good, and more abortion is not in and of itself a bad thing.
You talk about protecting the vulnerable? I'm all about that. It is very clear that women and children do better when child-bearing is deferred until the mother is ready for it -- when education is complete, when the mother is mature enough for the responsibility, when the mother is economically secure enough to raise her child, and when she is in a relationship which will give her a partner in rearing the child. If abortion allows a woman to put off motherhood until she is ready, then I am all for it.
Abortion is not without its risk and downsides, some of which you cited. I am cognizant of these, which is why it is *better* if contraception and abstinence can prevent the need for abortions, and in that respect fewer abortions would be preferable. But more abortions is better, in my opinion, than more unwanted, abused, impoverished and neglected children.
I've had my say. I know we will not agree, so I'll not argue with you any more.

If that were true, then Barack Obama would have never been born.
When you neglect the sanctity of the innocent, i.e. an unborn child, you lose all other moral grounds.
I will leave it at that.
I DID mean there should be more abortions. Because if more have access to it, there will be more! Not that I think people should just run out and get them but access should be improved. Thus, if I see more abortions I am happy since there is more access and less hyper Christian right wing blathering.
Sorry for my anti-religious rant. I am just hopeful that we can finally get back to separating church from state.

In my view abortion is not a casual thing, not a thoughtless thing, not a happy thing: it is a choice made in necessity and sorrow, and it is a blessing too.
I thank the health care professionals reading the blog who respect all this.
