A Public Service Announcement

  • Always assume that a gun is loaded.
  • Before cleaning your gun, please be certain that you have unloaded it.
  • To adequately declare a gun "safe" you should visually ensure that there is not still a round in the chamber.
  • In any event, it is still not a good idea to place your hand over the muzzle.
This has been a public service announcement.

  1. Nice reminder. I have a friend who learned this the hard way.

  2. I'm going to start asking EMS if there was any gun cleaning gear out in the home.

I think a LOT of these are screwing-around accidents, but everyone will let you off the desperately stupid train if you tell them it's an accident.

  3. Yeah, we generally accept the harmless fiction that it was simple negligence that caused the accident, instead of reckless endangerment.

That's as long as you shot yourself. If someone other than the gun-handler gets shot, the cops are a little more aggressive in asking questions. Fortunately, that's not our job...

  4. It takes so little effort to drop the magazine and pull back the slide as a matter of habit.

Same thing with adjusting power tools (routers, saws, etc.) while they're plugged in. Just keep reminding yourself of the consequences of a single wrong guess each time you get frustrated when slowing down to Do The Right Thing.

True accidents are unavoidable; as an example, minor bumps have been known to engage magnetic "safety" switches on power tools (the tool turns off and stays off if the power goes out and quickly returns.) Gun owners don't generally have the defense of a freakishly low-probability failure mode such as that, so most incidents can be chalked up to inattention or incompetence.

I wonder if insurance companies treat "patient is an idiot" as a preexisting condition... :/

  5. So, can that be repaired, and if so, how?

  6. My God that is pathetic. I hope to God it was not a cop!
